Ethique Review: The Perfect Happy-Planet Beauty Bar Solution for Travellers

Always on the hunt for ways to minimise our luggage whilst travelling, I recently put a number of Ethique’s solid beauty bars through their paces during my carry-on only month in Europe.  These shampoos, conditioners, laundry bars and more all performed better than I could have hoped for and now have a permanent place in my low-key beauty routine.

We’re all about travelling and packing light and having quality products really do make a difference.

Sink your teeth into this review to find out exactly how these ingenious products can help make your life easier whilst looking after our planet and saving your hard-earned cash in the process.

With a cult-following and a reputation for incredibly ethical business practices, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Ethique’s collection of solid beauty bars (think of your favourite hair care products with the water stripped out).

On the surface their products look much like traditional bars of soap (but all their shampoo range is in fact soap-free).  They’re activated like soap and dry solid in same way way too, but dig a little deeper and prepare for something special.

Vegan, sustainable, cruelty-free, palm oil free and plastic-free – Ethique is made of good stuff in every sense of the word (and right here in Aotearoa).

Happy Bodies

With all-natural ingredients like cocoa butter, coconut oil and a range of essential oils and little to no preservatives, these bars are kind to skin and hair (and as a bonus, they smell incredible!)

Thanks to plenty of testing (never on animals) and quality ingredients, I can personally attest to the fact that these products do exactly what they say they do.

I must admit, I was a little surprised to find that natural ingredients could work as effectively as my chemical-laden salon brands, but that’s exactly the case!

Happy Wallets

Each of these bars are hyper-concentrated and, because they’ve done away with unnecessary water, they take up next to no space.

Best of all though, as each bar contains between 3 and 6 times that of a normal bottle, think of all the money you’ll save! With the simple addition of water in the shower, you’ll bring the same bar to life, time and time again.

Happy Planet

All Ethique bars, products and wrappers are made from biodegradable ingredients.

When you’re ready to dispose of your packaging, you can plant it in your garden or pop it under the tap (they’re dissolvable!).  Do away with bottles, pumps and jars and say hello to a happier environment.

Happy Travellers

Whether you’re carry-on only travellers like us (and are looking to cut down on your liquids), or just want to avoid annoying spills in your toiletry bag, moving to solid bars certainly makes travelling easier.

Our Ethique Review – What’s What in the World of Beauty Bars?

With a reliable money back guarantee and sample sized kits, there’s really nothing to lose by giving a new haircare or beauty routine a go.

We understand that making a significant change to one’s beauty routine can be considered a risky business for some though, so to help you decide what products you’d like to try first, these are my honest thoughts, having incorporated them into my beauty and travel routine in recent months.

Frizz Wrangler

Shampoo for dry &/or frizzy hair.  With coconut oil, coconut butter and cocoa butter, this bar smells good enough to eat!  It foams up beautifully (which I wasn’t expecting from a solid bar) and leaves my hair feeling clean without unnecessary weight.

This bar does such a fantastic job of cleaning my scalp and removing oil that I can now go longer between washes.  I must admit, I really wasn’t expecting a bar like this to actually do a better job of washing my hair, but there you have it.

The Guardian

Conditioner for dry, damaged or frizzy hair.  With a creamy texture, The Guardian is applied much like a normal conditioner.  First you’ll want to pull it through your hair from mid to tip and then leave it to really do its job.

I find it takes a little longer to activate than my Ethique conditioner than a more traditional one but it’s absolutely worth persevering with.  My frizzy/wavy/thick mane is significantly softer when I use this combo and even better when I pop a little more in my hair as a leave-in conditioner.

You might also like to know… Offering the equivalent of 5 full bottles of conditioner, the Ethique conditioners are especially good value!

Shampoo & shaving bar.  Sold as an all-in-one solution for hair, this bar also does an exceptional job of making shaving a pleasure!  With its fabulous slippery lather, hairs are lifted helping ensure a close, smooth shave as the smell of lime, orange and mint drifts through the bathroom.

Shaving has never felt or smelt better!

Solid Laundry Bar & Stain Remover.  The key to travelling light is washing clothing as you go and to do so easily, you’ll want a quality laundry bar like Flash.

Applied directly to stains or generally to clothes, this creamy formula bubbles up just enough to get clothes feeling fresh and clean.  You’ll also love the natural mint and lavender scent, helping to make washing up a pleasure!

Pro Tip:  When travelling light, we recommend either washing your clothes every day in the shower or saving up a day or two to wash in the sink.  Do your best to wash as you go though, allowing plenty of time for clothes to dry before you need them next (as you just never know how much ventilation you’ll have in your next accommodation for drying).

In-Shower Containers

These handy containers are designed to hold both your shampoo and conditioner (or your shave bar, if you’d prefer), allowing them to dry properly in between washes.

As you’d expect from Ethique, they’re also plastic-free.  Made from bamboo and cornstarch, these containers are built to last whilst being compostable when you’re done with them.

Taking my bars on the road recently was totally fuss-free – I just tied an elastic band around my container and popped everything into my toiletry bag.

Travel Beauty Made Easy, Without Any Sacrifices

I really didn’t think it was possible to save money and space in my travel bags, whilst looking out for the environment, without some serious sacrifices.  I haven’t a clue how they did it, but Ethique has certainly done exactly that!

Do yourself and the environment a favour and give these clever little bars a go.

See you on the road, looking mighty fine!
